Puerto Rican Endemic Bird Species
Photos, videos, and links of our birds
IGUACA, COTORRA DE PUERTO RICO
Puerto Rican Amazon
Amazona vittata
A chunky green resident of moist upland forests. No other native parrots occur within its range, but the Red-crowned Parrot,
native to Mexico, is often kept in captivity and looks very similar. Compared to the Puerto Rican Parrot, the Red-crowned has
more extensive red on the forehead, has a small red patch on its wings, and has gray, not pinkish-colored, legs and feet. Calls
include a loud harsh “wee-uh.”

Where we go for this bird?  There are three wild populations of the Iguaca, the best one is at El Yunque National Forest.
"As the path of the birds in the air or of fishes in the water is invisible, even so is the path of the possessors of wisdom."
CR
Similar species:  Orange-fronted Parakeet is confused with the Iguaca, specially al El Portal de El Yunque Visitor Center.
